What is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble prohormone with several forms. In humans, the most important
forms are Vitamin D3 (aka: cholecalciferol) and Vitamin D2 (aka: ergocalciferol)
Vitamin D3 is the most common form. It is found in food and is also made in sunlight exposed
skin from the conversion of 7-deydrocholesterol. It is also found in over-the-counter (OTC) supplements.
Vitamin D2 is derived from fungal and plant sources. It is available in both OTC and prescription supplementation used to treat Vitamin D deficiency.
Both Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3 are converted to 25-Hydroxyvitamin D in the liver. This is later hydroxylated in the kidneys and other tissues.

PNW Hydration & Wellness specializes in Vitamin D Optimization. What does that mean?
Well, "normal" lab values for Vitamin D circulating in the bloodstream is 30 - 100 ng/dL. That is a 70 point difference of "normal" between high and low. We know the person at 30 feels far different than the person at 100!
We want to OPTIMIZE your Vitamin D and to do that research has shown that you need to have a value of >60 and <125 ng/dL of Vitamin D circulating for optimization! Optimization means the action of making the best or most effective use of a situation or resource. Vitamin D is acutally a steriod hormone produced from cholesterol when your skin is exposed to specific rays from the sun. For this reason, Vitamin D is often referred to a "the sunshine vitamin". However, sun exposure rarely provides adequate Vitamin D and has far more negative possible side effects when exposed and not using sunscreen protection (which mitigates Vitamin D production from sun exposure). So we recommend to wear your sunscreen and ensure you are getting adequate Vitamin D through diet/foods and other forms of supplementation as only a handful of foods contain significant amounts of this crucial vitamin and deficiency isvery common. In fact, >40% of the population is deficient.
Unfortunately, here in the GREAT Pacific NorthWest (PNW) the sun just doesn't ever get high enough in the sky in the Fall & Winter months for the sunrays to stimulate Vitamin D.
Never fear, PNW Hydration & Wellness is here! Let us help you optimize your Vitamin D!
We will start with a lab draw to assess your Vitamin D levels and based on your results our licensed medical provider will make recommendations for repletion to optimization and then maintenance to keep you there.
What does Vitamin D do in the body?
Vitamin D is critical for maintaining healthy levels of calcium and phosphorus by aiding in their absorption from the gut. This helps the body form and maintain strong bones.
Vitamin D also modulates neuromuscular, immune and other cellular functions.
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone disease, such as rickets and osteomalacia. Deficiency has also been associated with a wide range of medical conditions including; heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, depression, decreased immunity and cancer.
